Ritual in its most basic form is the reenactment of an event that exists beyond the confines of the material world.

In Indo-European pagan traditions (and many others), this ritual often takes the form of sacrifice, which reenacts—and thus sustains—creation. For Christians (and others still), rituals involve the reenactment of an event which, while having happened in the material world, is believed to have transcended it.

By participating in these rituals, participants leave profane time, and enter sacred time; they experience the eternal return.

Yet these same acts, when removed from their sacred environment, become meaningless, or even debased: a group of believers eats some crackers, or a man kills an animal for no reason.

Training, especially strength training, can likewise be meaningless and vain.

But when training is approached as a ritual—as a ritual reenactment of a sacred event, or a manifestation of a numinous power—it takes on a wholly different, transcendent character.

The act of ‘lifting’ something has no inherent value, other than when done for practical reasons. But when the same action is performed not to achieve a result, but precisely because it is difficult, we ritually reenact the fundamental principle that creates and sustains all living things.

In the simplest terms, it is the triumph of the will. And this ‘triumph’ is life itself.

All Life is Struggle!
